How To Clean Your Robot Vacuum

Since robotic vacuum cleaners work automatically, with or without your presence, you can easily forget to clean them as often as needed. Like any other vacuum models, the robovac requires regular maintenance to work at its best condition. Today we will talk in detail about deep-cleaning methods to keep your robot clean as a whistle and fit as a fiddle.

Clean the vacuum components

Good components make good vacuum cleaners. Keeping every part of the machine clean is important.

Empty the dustbin

Most manufacturers advise cleaning the dustbin after every cleaning cycle for the strongest suction power during the next use. In most cases, the dustbin is located in the back of the robot so you have to press the release tab and pull it towards you to remove it. The bin should be removed when the machine is not at its docking station.

With the center-mounted dustbin models, you can simply pull it out of the top of the vacuum, even while the robot is charging at its dock.

There are newer models with self-emptying dustbin technology, so you just need to remove the bag inside the dock when it gets full.

Clear the sensors

Sensors allow the robots to navigate their surroundings. If these “eyes” are covered with dust, then your bot can’t finish the job it is designed for. To locate the sensor's placement you can read the manual or check the vacuum maker’s website. You can use a Magic Eraser sponge, cotton cloth, or a lightly damp sponge to wipe off the sensors.

Check the wheels and brushes

Wheels and brushes take in grime and other objects along the way as they rotate. The trash, mostly hair, can be stuck in the wheel cavity, the wheel’s axle, and the brushes. This will make your robot move strangely and fail to pick up dirt from corners as the brushes won’t spin. Check and remove any troublesome objects or coiled strands wrapped around the wheels and brush rolls regularly.

Filter maintenance

Filters trap fine dust inside the dustbin to keep these particles from escaping and coming back into the room environment. It is recommended to clean your robot’s filter every 5 to 10 cleaning sessions. The most ideal method is sucking out the dust with a handheld vacuum. Otherwise, you can use a soft brush to gently clean it. Do not use water or any kind of liquid to rinse the filter off.

Keep the contacts tidy

Dirty electrical contacts on both the dock and the robot can lead to failure in its automatic charging ability. Remember to wipe the contacts with a microfiber cloth; this will help to prevent the recharge problem and bring you an energetic and ready-to-work robot vacuum.

Dealing with special stuff

When it comes to cleaning a robotic vacuum, there are things that need to be treated specially.

Hair removal

Human hair or pet hair can get stuck in the spinning parts of the robot vacuum. The robot normally has a comb or a blade tool for hair removal, although these tools don’t always complete the task as mentioned in many reviews of best vacuum cleaner brands . In this case, a pair of scissors or a knife will do the trick, especially in the case of stubborn coiled strands of thread or hair.

Gross stuff

In the worst scenario, your bot may accidentally smear dog poo or spread a sticky spill all over the floor. You should wipe all the components with a slightly damped melamine sponge to get the robot vac clean. Be careful with the opening parts of the machine and don’t let water get inside.

Without occasional maintenance, even the best rated vacuum cleaner can’t perform well. In the worst case, it could eventually cause trouble and stop working. As long as you care for your robovac, it will stay in good working condition and serve you for many years.
